Courses of study and curriculum guides for grades kindergarten through eight are in compliance with the Ohio Department of Education's Learning Standards for Elementary and Secondary Schools and the guidelines and policies of the Diocese of Steubenville Office of Education.​

Religious Education

Our Catholic faith is very important at St. John Central School. Our students in kindergarten-8 th grade receive religious education several times a week as well as attending weekly mass. The preschool students also learn about the Catholic faith. Our Catholic religion teachers use materials approved by our diocese to teach their students about our faith and moral values. Also, we pray every morning during assembly and listen to a student read about the saint of the day. Our 3 rd -8 th grade students take part in a penance service during Advent and Lent. Our 2 nd graders prepare for and make their First Confession and First Holy Communion. We consistently incorporate our faith into our daily schedule at St. John.

 

Report Cards & Student Evaluation

 

Report cards are sent home for grades kindergarten through eight four times a year to indicate to parents the child’s academic growth and achievement.  Students may also take home class papers for parents to review to keep parents up to date with their child’s progress. The following standards are used as guides in the assessment of grades:  Class Participation, Ability Levels, Tests and Examinations, Homework and Assignments, and Student Effort.

 

Kindergarten students will receive an individualized assessment report for each grading period. 

 

Students in grades 1 through 8 will receive letter grades in Music, Physical Education, and Art that will be included in determining Honor Roll participation.

 

Grade Scale for Grades 1 through 8:            

A+ = 100% - 97 %                Superior

A = 96% - 93%

A- = 92% - 90%

B+ =  89% - 87%                  Very Good

B = 86% - 83%

B- = 82% - 80%

C+ = 79% - 77%                   Average

C =   76% - 73%

C- = 72% - 70%                   

D+ =  69% - 67%                  Below Average

D = 66% - 63%

D- = 62% - 60%

F  =  59% and below            Failure
