Heather Schaad, K-8 Music, 1-2 Religion

TEACHING EXPERIENCE:

Prior to joining the St. John Central Faculty, I taught for Parkersburg Catholic Elementary School.  While there I taught general music classes, hand bells, and directed the band and choir.  I also previously worked at Lima-Shawnee (middle and high school band) and Frontier (general music and high school choir).  I am a graduate of Otterbein University in Westerville, Ohio.  This is my second year teaching at St. John’s.

FAMILY:

My family includes my husband Evan and our three sons.

OUT-OF-SCHOOL ACTIVITIES:

Outside of school I enjoy spending time with my family, participating in Zumba, operating a small farm with my husband, and riding roller coasters at Cedar Point.  I enjoy singing at my parish, Our Lady of Mercy, where I serve as a cantor.

CLASSROOM POLICIES AND GOALS:

Students are expected to come to class prepared and to fully participate in our daily endeavors.  More information on learning outcomes in music for specific grades are available by contacting me at any time.

STATEMENT OF CLASS CURRICULUM:

Music:  In the lower grades we focus on the joys of music through participation.  We learn many important fundamentals and have the chance to apply them through group activities in class.  In the upper grades, we focus on the applications of theory and study music in multiple genres.  All students participate in two musical programs.   A Christmas program is held in December and an additional program is held in the spring.  Students in seventh and eighth grade are also responsible for learning hymns and ordinaries of the mass to lead the singing each week at our school’s Wednesday morning mass.

First Grade Religion:  In first grade, we learn many new things about our Catholic faith.  We focus on God’s love for us and growing as Jesus’ friend.  Our textbook is from the Alive in Christ series and more information on our curriculum is available at aliveinchrist.osv.com.

Second Grade Religion:  The second grade year is all about learning, loving, and celebrating our Catholic faith.  We will focus on preparation for the first sacraments of Penance and Holy Communion.  Our textbook is from the Alive in Christ series and more information on our curriculum is available at aliveinchrist.osv.com.
